Fursuit Care
Please note that my products are NOT washing machine or dryer safe. I do not take responsibility for damages due to machine washing fursuit parts. The best way to ensure your fursuit will stay nice longer is to avoid things that may damage or stain it in the first place. Make sure to brush your suit routinely to keep it looking nice. Below are the best ways to care for your ATD fursuit!
Try to Avoid:
Try to avoid things like mud, puddles, food, pools, open flames, etc. Open flames or any kind of excessive heat can melt and damage the fur fibers on your fursuit. Greasy/sticky food can stain your suit. Avoid getting your fursuit eyes wet such as in heavy rain or snow. Avoid getting on the floor or ground in your suit. Not only does the ground harbor loads of bacteria, but you can easily stain or damage your suit. Does a small child want to take a photo with you, but has visibly gross or sticky hands? Probably don’t allow the photo or do so with great precaution!
Helpful Tips:
-
When it's time to wash your suit, it's important to choose a gentle detergent. I recommend "Woolite Delicates" laundry detergent.
-
A good stain remover for spot cleaning is "Folex Carpet Spot Remover."
-
Wearing moisture-wicking athletic wear such as Under Armour or balaclava while suiting not only helps keep sweat out of your fursuit, but also helps keep you cool!
Heads:
Your fursuit head does not need deep cleaning after every use. When cleaning any part of your suit, use cold water only.
I strongly recommend spot cleaning your head gently with a damp cloth wiping only in the direction of the fur. Do not scrub your fursuit. You can also use a portable carpet cleaner such as a Bissell Little Green. Make sure to never apply hot water or heat to your fursuit.
After every use:
-
Spray the interior with disinfectant fursuit spray (avoid spraying the eyes).
After heavy use:
-
You may wash head gently in a bathtub or sink. Do not machine wash. Do not submerge and DO NOT GET EYES WET. I print and seal my fursuit eyes and try to make them water/scratch proof, but you should never take the risk. You can ball up a very soft cloth and place in each eye to avoid accidentally splashing water on the eyes.
-
Use a small amount of soap/gentle detergent to saturate a small cleaning cloth. Gently blot and/or wipe your head with the soapy, saturated rag or fingertips in the direction of the fur.
-
Make sure to rinse thoroughly with a cloth saturated with clean water. Repeat rinsing as needed.
-
Gently squish out as much water as possible with a dry cloth.
-
Dry the head using a high velocity fan until completely dry. Brush the fur in the correct direction every few hours while drying to avoid crimping. Make sure the head is COMPLETELY dry before removing it from the fan to avoid mold or unpleasant smells.
Handpaws, Feetpaws & Tails:
Spot clean only. Do not machine wash. Do not submerge handpaws, feetpaws, or tails in water.
To Clean:
-
Use a damp cloth or a Bissell Little Green to spot clean.
-
Gently rinse thoroughly with a damp cloth.
-
Make sure to air out completely using a high velocity fan.
-
Brush the fur in the correct direction every few hours while drying to avoid crimping.
Bodysuits & Legs:
Your bodysuit/legs do not need washed after every use. Only after heavy use/profuse sweating does your bodysuit/legs need washed. Do not machine wash.
To Clean:
-
Remove all padding that is not attached. Remove all stuffing from padding pillows. Once unstuffed, padding pillows may be washed in the washing machine on cold with regular detergent.
-
You may submerge your bodysuit/legs in a bathtub or sink filled with a small amount of soap/detergent and cold water. Never use warm or hot water when washing any part of your fursuit.
-
Gently massage the suit with a cloth or fingertips. Do not scrub your fursuit.
-
Rinse gently, but thoroughly when complete.
-
Gently squish out as much water as possible with hands before laying out to dry. Do not hang to dry as the extra water weight can stretch and shorten the life of your suit.
-
Lay flat on a large table or floor that will not be damaged by water. You can also drape over a chair or two to encourage airflow. Use a high velocity fan to dry your bodysuit/legs until completely dry. Brush the fur in the correct direction occasionally while drying to avoid crimping.
When Storing Your Fursuit:
-
Store out of direct sunlight
-
Store in a room temperature/cool & dry environment
-
Remove any accessories such as piercings, magnetic eyelids, halters, etc to avoid fur matts and foam disfiguration
-
Avoid smashing/squishing your suit (Your fursuit could become permanently damaged if stored in unnatural positions for long periods of time)
-
Vacuum sealing heads is not recommended
-
To avoid theft and/or heat damage, do not store/leave your fursuit in a car
